The Maze Procedure Service in the Low Country
The board-certified surgeons at Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Associates perform the maze procedure in The Low Country, to treat atrial fibrillation. Although this procedure is complex, it has a high success rate. Place your confidence in our experienced team and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns regarding your medical journey.
Understanding the Maze Procedure
This is the preferred procedure to treat AFib for individuals who need another simultaneous heart surgery such as coronary artery bypass or valve repair. The goal of the maze procedure is to create a new pathway that disrupts the erratic electrical impulses caused by AFib, so the heart beats normally and effectively. To do this, your surgeon will make small incisions in the upper chambers of the heart in a distinct, maze-like pattern. This enables scar tissue to form that will redirect the erratic electrical impulses and keep them on course.
The surgery takes about 3 hours to perform or more if another procedure is also taking place. 70% to 95% of patients who undergo the maze procedure experience long-term reprieve from AFib. Your cardiologist and surgeon will provide detailed instructions for you to prepare for your surgery.
Recovery after the Maze Procedure
The specifics of your recovery will vary from others, but with a successful procedure they should proceed as follows:
- It takes about 6 months for a full recovery from the maze procedure.
- The first week of recovery takes place in the hospital.
- After 3 months you will most likely be able to return to work.
- Anticoagulation medication will be prescribed to prevent the formation of blood clots.
- During recovery it is normal to feel fatigued and to experience pain in the area where your chest was opened.
We will arrange for the necessary follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery. Be sure to vocalize any continued discomfort or symptoms so that they may be addressed.
